Bonding With Your Children through Teaching Them How to Garden

Teach Children How to Grow a Vegetable Garden
Children in homes with organic vegetable gardens are more willing to eat fruits and vegetables.
Why Garden?
We believe the return on time spent with children by teaching them how to garden is tenfold. Children who learn new things and are praised for their strengths feel confident, liked and accepted.
Additionally, fostering self-esteem in children, like the satisfaction from growing healthy organic vegetables, allows them to feel proud of what they can do and believe in themselves. Adopting an organic lifestyle can also ensure the produce grown in a home vegetable garden are free from harmful chemicals and pesticides.
There is no better time than the present to give our children the gift of health and self-esteem! One way to do that is to start a family garden and show them how planting, nurturing and caring for an organic garden not only feels exciting but tastes amazing because THEY GREW THAT!

Get Started
Teach your children to garden with these five simple steps!
1. Start by designating a special garden space for the kids. Great news - it doesn’t require a large backyard!
A special garden space can be on balcony, deck or patio! Garden in a Box features garden kits that are specially designed for tight spaces and are as small as 3 square feet!
2. Provide your children with their very own gardening tools and talk about garden maintenance such as putting away tools and setting aside time to tend to the garden.
3. Pick out kid friendly seeds, such as: lettuce, carrots and cherry tomatoes.
4. Engage with your children throughout the entire gardening process to promote understanding and awareness of how gardens with vegetables help promote a healthy lifestyle and overall family wellbeing.
5. Do research on the seeds you plant to give the best chance for success.
Allowing children to take part in tending to a backyard garden or patio garden promotes family bonding, builds self-esteem and teaches them responsibility and organization. Additionally, it provides satisfaction from caring for, harvesting and eating the plants they grow.
Make life memorable by starting a garden with your kids!

Plant a butterfly habitat anywhere and help save the majestic Monarch Butterfly!

The Monarch Butterfly
Flutter across the United States with the beautiful monarch butterfly, where we’ll discover what makes them so unique, the miracle of their migration pattern, the threat to their existence and what we can do to preserve the legacy of these breathtaking creatures.
With some possessing a wingspan up to five inches, monarch butterflies have a distinctive orange, black and white color pattern. Their eggs are laid on the underside of
a wildflower called milkweed and although toxic to many creatures, milkweed provides all the nutrition for the caterpillar stage of the monarch butterfly.
As a result of ingesting milkweed, monarch butterflies become toxic themselves and can make any animal that eats them very sick, therefore avoiding them in
the future.
Migration
Once monarch butterflies become adults after the caterpillar stage, they feed on the nectar of a broad range of blooming plants. Their lifespan can be as short as a few weeks up to 8 or 9 months if they are the last generation of the year that participates in the fall migration. Every fall, when the weather begins to turn cold, monarch butterflies travel by the millions from North America and Canada more than 2,0000 miles to Southern California or central Mexico to mate. Since these incredible creatures only make this trip once in their life, the miracle and wonder of their migration pattern year after year is truly spectacular.
Monarch butterflies play a vital role as a pollinator of many wildflowers. Monarchs are attracted to flower varieties that are bright in color, grow in clusters and have flat landing surfaces. Monarch butterfly populations have decreased drastically due to loss of ecosystems along their migration journey, pesticides, climate change and logging in Mexico, where they roost.

Butterfly Garden Habitat
Thankfully there is something we can do to help support the continued legacy of these beautiful creatures. The National Wildlife Federation recommends planting a monarch habitat garden that is pesticide-free with milkweed and other nectar-producing plants that monarchs can use for a food source. Garden in a Box is a proud supplier of the Harmony Butterfly Garden Habitat– an essential habitat devoted to the survival of these precious creatures as well as bees and other pollinator insects! The Harmony Butterfly Garden is an all-inclusive kit that includes an organic collection of flower seeds commonly found in the United States, an aluminum frame with three vinyl planters and an easy-to-use drip irrigation system. Set up is quick and simple and guaranteed to bring life to any balcony, deck, porch or rooftop!
